To truly appreciate Darjeeling one has to understand that when one enters Darjeeling it is like traveling back in time to the days of the British Raj. The most popular street is The Mall where one can find Tibetans selling hand knitted sweaters. Souvenir shops are also available in the dozen where both real and imitation antiques can be bought. The Mall leads to Chaurasta, a square full of commercial activity. This is the hub where hotels, restaurants and shops fight for space and the area is also a paradise for souvenir collections. A spot worth visiting is the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute created by the late Tenzing Norgay. Here the equipment used by Norgay with Sir Edmund Hillary to climb Mt Everest is displayed. Near to the institute is a zoological garden where an assortment of wildlife such as yaks, Siberian tigers and red pandas has made their home. Darjeeling tourism has to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace as a reminder to the good old days of the British Raj. |
