(gives Diane the flowers) Diane: Flowers! Jim, how nice. Thank you. Jim: So, what are you doing tomorrow night? Diane: I don’t know. What do you want to do? Jim: I thought we could maybe go to dinner and a movie. Diane: Are you asking me for a date, Mr. O’Neal? Jim: Yes, Mrs. O’Neal, I am. Diane: How wonderful. I’d love to go on a date with my husband. Conversation B Diane: So what movie do you want to see? Jim: I just read some movie reviews. Quick Thinking sounds good. Diane: Quick Thinking? What kind of movie is that? Jim: It’s an action movie. Diane: Oh, Jim, you know I don’t really like action movies. Jim: But the reviews say it’s really good. Diane: Well, let me read the reviews. Jim: OK. Conversation C (Diane puts down the paper.) Jim: What do you think? Diane: I’m sorry. It doesn’t sound very interesting to me. (Erin comes in.) I’d rather see a different movie. Erin: Are you two going to a movie? Diane: Yeah, but we can’t decide which one. Erin: You should see Love to Laugh. Diane: That sounds like a comedy. Erin: It is. It’s a romantic comedy. Diane: That’s my favorite kind. Jim: Well, we could go to a different movie. (looks at newspaper) How about No Tomorrow? Diane: Erin doesn’t want to go out on a date with her parents, Jim. Erin: Yeah, Dad. Diane: What kind of movie is that, anyway? Jim: Science fiction. Diane: Uh, no thanks. Jim: (looks at newspaper again) Well, how about . . . Diane: No. What are the show times for Love to Laugh? I think tickets get more expensive every time I go to a movie. Jim: You don’t go to movies very often. Diane: You’re right. Jim: Well, let’s go buy some snacks. (Erin and her date come up behind them.) Erin: Dad? Mom? (Jim and Diane turn around.) Jim: Erin?! What a surprise! Erin: Yeah, no kidding. Conversation B Diane: You must be Kevin. Nice to meet you. Kevin: Nice to meet you, Mrs. O’Neal, Mr. O’Neal. Diane: So, you two decided to see a movie. Jim: Which one? Maybe we should sit behind you and make sure you?e really watching the movie. Erin: Dad! Jim: I’m just kidding. Kevin: We’re going to see Twelve Knives. Diane: Um, what is that rated? Kevin: I think that? rated R. Conversation C Diane: Oh, really? We don’t usually let Erin go to R-rated movies. Erin: (whispers) Mom, please don? embarrass me. Kevin: Don’t worry, Mrs. O’Neal. All my friends said it? really a good movie and got good reviews. Erin: And sometimes PG-13 movies are worse than R-rated ones. Diane: Sometimes. Jim: (looks at his watch) Well, we’d better go buy our snacks. We don’t want to be late for our movie! Diane: You love eating popcorn anytime. Jim: You’re right. So do you want some, too? Maybe I should get a large popcorn. Diane: No, thanks. I’m not hungry. Jim: Are you sure? Conversation B Jim: So you’re not going to eat any of my popcorn? Diane: Maybe just a little. Jim: I’ll get a large popcorn. And I’ll get a soda. Do you want one? Diane: No, thanks. I’m not thirsty. Jim: You may be after you have a little of my popcorn. I’ll get a large soda, too. Diane: Um, and can you get me a candy bar? Jim: (laughs) I thought you weren’t hungry. (goes to buy snacks) Conversation C (Jim comes back with the snacks.) Jim: OK, let’s go. Which theater are we in? Diane: (looks at the tickets) Number 10. Jim: I hope we find good seats. Diane: Do you want to sit in the front or the back? Jim: In the middle. Diane: OK, and let? sit on the aisle. Jim: Why? You’ll have to move when people need to go to the restroom. Jamie: Well, Erin needed me. Jim: She needed you? Jamie: Yeah. When I got home from Haley’s house, Erin was sitting here crying. Diane: Why were you crying, Erin? Erin: Because I was so mad at Kevin. Jim: Why? But I thought you really liked him. Erin: Not after what happened tonight. Conversation B Diane: What happened tonight? Erin: Well, Twelve Knives was an awful movie! There was no plot. People just kept killing each other. Diane: That’s why we don’t like you to watch R-rated movies. Erin: I know. I’m sorry, Mom. Jim: So you’re mad that Kevin wanted you to see that movie? Jamie: And because he didn’t want to leave. Erin: Yeah, he really liked it! Conversation C Jim: So what did you do? Erin: I told Kevin I was leaving. Then I waited for you guys. But I saw a friend of mine and she brought me home. Diane: I’m sorry you had a bad date, honey. Erin: It’s OK. Jamie cheered me up. Jamie: Really? I did? Erin: Yeah.
