On Seat Occupation (论占座)
Seat occupation is one of the most typical phenomena that college students witness and experience on campus every day. The phenomenon is understandable. On (the) one hand, colleges and universities in China have been considerably enlarging the enrollment of students over the past years. On the other hand, the investment on and construction of infrastructure on campus such as classroom buildings, library, dormitory and canteen are limited due to the fact that our country is still a developing nation. However, seat occupation will have some negative effects if we do not attach enough importance to the phenomenon. It is apparent that seat occupation has the following side effects. In the first place, seat occupation can result in an intense atmosphere among students. On campus, students are expected to live in a harmonious, friendly, and relaxed atmosphere. Seat occupation destroys the desired atmosphere and brings a heavy psychological burden to students. In addition, seat occupation can dilute the quality of our university education which stresses not only academic achievements but also moral culture (德育). It is during the university life and study that young people gradually form their ideas of moral standards. Seat occupation can only result in students’ selfishness and make them lose the spirit of sacrifice which is badly needed in our society when we perform team work after graduation. Last but not least important, seat occupation can spoil the international image of China and Chinese people as a whole. Since China’s entry to WTO, we have more opportunities to conduct exchanges of various kinds with foreign friends. When we graduate from colleges and universities and live and work in international conditions, the bad habit of seat occupation will cause damage to the image of China and Chinese people as a whole because we do not only represent ourselves but also our nation on international occasions. All in all, we should have an objective view on seat occupation and try to create a relatively harmonious and friendly environment for all university students while the present condition on campus can not be improved in the near future. On spitting (论吐痰)
The infectious disease SARS has made everyone in China seriously reflect on our daily behaviour, in particular, bad manners. Spitting is one of the most typical bad manners we witness around us every day. SARS has made us deeply aware of the detrimental effects of the bad manner — spitting. The common bad manner spitting does have the following three side-effects at least. In the first place, spitting spreads epidemics of various kinds. During SARS, we got to know much medical knowledge that we had not known and noticed. Medical experts including Zhong Nanshan have informed us that there are bacteria and viruses of numerous sorts in spitting, which can survive from at least three months to several years in air and soil. In spring and autumn, the bacteria and viruses in spitting are carried to every corner of our living environment due to the windy days. It is easy for children and senior people to get infected by epidemics. What’s more, spitting can cause damage to our beautiful environment and public places. It is well known that governments at all levels in China has made great efforts to improve and invested much on our living and working environment and public places. However, wherever you go, including Tian’anmen Square in Beijing and the library and dormitory in our university, the stain of spitting can be easily found here and there. If we do not get rid of the bad manner — spitting, to create a better living, working, and studying environment will become an empty talk. Last but not least important, spitting can spoil the international image of China and Chinese people as a whole. Since China’s entry to WTO and successful bidding of 2008 Olympic Games, we have more and more opportunities to get into contact with the international world. If we do spit on international occasions, our action will bring damage to the international image of China and our Chinese people because we represent not only ourselves but also our nation when we are face to face with foreigners. In sum, as far as the reasons and effects metioned above are concerned, spitting is a fairly bad manner and extremely harmful to both our health and our international image. It is no doubt that everyone in our society should be fully aware of the very fact about spitting and rid ourselves of the bad manner without any delay to embrace a more healthy and better future.
